Did you know that only two Minnesota active standing sires rank in the Top 20 sires of Minnesota Bred horses?
If you want Minnesota Breds, and want to take advantage of the high Minnesota Bred Purses, you may want to buy or breed horses that can win in Minnesota. Logical, isn't it since Minnesota has unique weather conditions, a turf track, and offers some highly restricted Minnesota Bred races.
Stormy Business is the clear leader among active sires of Minnesota Breds.
Samstar, by Stormy Business out of L' Etoile Jolie, races in the 7th this Sunday. We own this horse with Curtis Sampson and Samstar came from a discussion long ago with Russ Sampson. We thought we would try a breeding along the same lines as their great horse Wallys Choice. Wally was the last and only graded stakes winner bred in Minnesota in two decades.
Unfortunately we, like many others in Minnesota, have had a hard time getting the MN bred races we had planned for and therefore Samstar may have a tough go of it against open company horses bred in Kentucky, Florida and Oklahoma. You may not know that once horses are entered in races, decisions are made that there are just not enough horses entered to let certain races go. This is because there were so few horses bred in Minnesota back in 2012 but It's still a pity that breeders and owners that have been loyal to racing in Minnesota, can't get the state restricted races they planned on when breeding or buying horses years earlier. C'est La Vie in this state.
We are nevertheless excited to see Samstar gain some racing experience this Sunday.
Ah yes, as Ronald Reagan once said, "Facts Are Stubborn Things" and with another win by Sue’s Stormy this weekend over a sloppy Canterbury track, Stormy Business continues to maintain his lead among all active sires in Minnesota Bred winners and earnings over the last two racing seasons.
Minnesota racing is a little different but some folks just don't realize it. To be a successful sire of MN breds, they must produce foals that can go short and long, run when young to take advantage of 2 and 3 year old age restrictions, run in all weather conditions and run on the Canterbury turf course. Stormy Business is one of those few sires whose foals have won races in every one of those variable distance, age advantaged and surface conditions!
Stormy Business is also one of the few MN bred leading sires who actually stands for breeding in the state of Minnesota!
