These Fact Books include statistical Thoroughbred breeding detail based upon breeding activity reported to The Jockey Club. While declines continue, state by state results vary dramatically. Understanding Variation in Breeding
Quality in breeding cannot be assured. Defects cannot be eliminated, by simply acquiring expensive mares or breeding to expensive stallions. Though hard to understand, variation uniquely affects Thoroughbred breeding quality. Statistical variation in Thoroughbred breeding is extreme and can be described by studying a few factors and examples.
Minnesota Breeding Economics
This 2016 Minnesota breeding economic study was presented to appropriate Thoroughbred organizations. Since then, purse distribution have been partially addressed and breeding payments have increased. However, the unpredictable nature of the breeding program still exists and an inability to create a program that attracts high quality state standing sires continues to suppress actual mares being bred in Minnesota and the quality of Minnesota state breds. We continue to hope that solutions related to root cause breeding economic issues can be developed rather than playing around the edges of the problems, which only perpetuate the illusion of progress that is shattered frequently by non-competitive quality and quantity Minnesota breeding results.
